DOOM 3
I got my hands on DOOM3. While installing it, I flipped through the manual, looking for anything that hinted towards a coop multiplayer mode. No such luck. For that, I'd have to buy an XBox and Doom 3 again. Well, that's not going to happen. But it's not the end of the world either.
One of the really cool features is this:
When you approach a computer panel or other graphical interface, your weapon lowers and your reticle becomes a mouse pointer you can use to interact with the information on-screen.
That is pretty neat. Computer panels don't act like one single switch where you click a button and that's it. You actually may need to select single items and buttons from the screen, for instance, to operate elevators.
The game starts somewhat like Half-Life. Your character is in no danger just yet. You get to explore the station a bit, talk to people, push buttons and listen to instructions where to go next. It's dark, though. Very dark. I turned up the brightness, gamma, whatever I was able to find. You even have a flashlight. It's still dark though. It truly feels like a nightmare waiting to happen.
Then all the sudden, all Hell breaks loose. Quite literally. All those people you talked to earlier while peacefully walking around? Yeah, whoever's left of those guys is looking to ruin your day. Aside from mutated humans, there's also a variety of aliens scattered throughout the building. Plenty of scary moments; You see a dead body that you didn't kill? Prepare for some alien to drop from the ceiling, break through the door, come jumping out of a vent or at you when you open the next door. And yes, it IS scary.
That flashlight you have — well, it won't work while holding a gun. So you're constantly switching back and forth between weapon and flashlight by pressing the F key, trying to see what the hell you're shooting at.
So I did what any coward would do: turn on God mode. Of course, figuring out how to turn it on was a nightmare by itself. Considering it's a DOOM game, first thing I tried was "IDDQD". I also tried "IDKFA", but neither one of them worked. I tried using the tilde key to get a console. Didn't work either. Then I tried calling doom3.exe with parameters. Tried: -dev -developer -console. Nada. Then I found the DoomConfig.cfg file. I added the line:
bind "`" "console"
But it didn't work. Also tried the tilde itself:
bind "~" "console"
No worky. So I got impatient and just tried
bind "g" "god"
Pressed it once in game, and whaddayaknow–I'm invincible. And you know what? The game is still scary as all hell. But as it's Monday morning, I actually have to get work done. Hopefully I'll have more time to play later this week. Perhaps next weekend. One great game though.
Oh, just found out that CTRL+ALT+tilde gets me a console. Yeay.
